ALHAJA WUSAMOTU MOROUNRANTI DOSUNMU PRIZE

The Alhaja Wusamotu Morounranti Dosunmu Prize is one of the Gabi Williams Memorial Prizes. It was established in 2023 to reward the Best Undergraduate Student in the final year Business Administration examinations at the University of Lagos. It was inaugurated as a bequest of Dr. Gabi Williams who wished to honour his mother, Late Alhaja Wusamotu Morounranti Dosunmu. She was an outstanding business woman who traded in textiles and was a devoted mother to her many children, raising her first set of 5 children single-handedly. She made sure they each received an excellent education in various parts of the world (UK, USA, Switzerland, Nigeria) and the encouragement needed to excel later in their various fields of endeavour. The prize was established importantly, to give back to society and to encourage and support exceptional performance in Business Studies at the University of Lagos.

Biography of late Alhaja Wusamotu Morounranti Dosunmu

Born in 1916, Mama Gabi was a dynamic businesswoman who despite a modest formal education, rose to become a foremost trader of textiles and the toast of Lagos Society. By virtue of unflinching hard work and entrepreneurial vision, she became wealthy and was able to single-handedly educate her first set of 5 children in Nigeria, United Kingdom, United States and Switzerland. The first set of children include late Dr. Gabi Williams (first born) and (second born) late Babatunde Mobolaji Williams, a Cambridge educated lawyer who established Babs. M. Williams & Co., a thriving legal practice in Western House, Broad Street, Lagos Island. The law practice is still active.

Mama Gabi was a primary school classmate of late politician, Adeniran Ogunsanya, SAN. She was the beloved wife of late Justice of Federal Court of Appeal, Honourable Justice Latif Junaid Dosunmu (LJD).

A philanthropist and socialite, Mama Gabi continues to be spoken of by large populations in her children’s generation with fondness and admiration, decades after she passed to Glory in 1989. Included in her wide circles of acquaintance were prominent Syrian and Lebanese industrialists in whose business she invested and public figures such as Nigerian politician, late Chief MKO Abiola, and Oba of Lagos, His Royal Highness, Rilwan Akiolu who remains loyal to the family members she is survived by.
