SEPTEMBER 21 IS WORLD ALZHEIMER’S DAY

GWAF at 2021 School of Post Basic Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Students week,
Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos.

In practical effort towards achieving our objective and bridge the gap in human capital, skill development and manpower, GWAF partners the National Association of Nigerian Student Nurses and Midwives, School of Post Basic Psychiatric Mental Health, Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba on her 9th Annual Nurses week celebration held from 20th – 24th September, 2021. The event was themed “The Role of Mental Health Nurse on the menace of depression and suicide amongst Nigerian youth”

The intervention is aimed at enlightening the students on the professional career opportunities available in the field of mental and brain health, especially, Dementia care.

The one week celebration featured GWAF on the 1st day. It was an avenue to create awareness on the global increase of Dementia and the need for specially trained carers and professional in various aspects to carter for this ever increasing population who need special care tailored to their peculiar medical, social and psycho-emotional needs.

The session was led by a member of our faculty- Ms. Bola Oshikanlu, a certified Occupational Therapist, currently practicing in the UK, via zoom supported by educational and informational data on available opportunities at continental and global levels in gerontology and Dementia care. About 60 students and 20 staff were reached at the event with Dementia information and our IEC materials.

Other speakers at the long week event include the Chief Host and Medical Director of Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Dr. O.A Owoeye, Mrs. O.A. Odufuwa, Head of Nursing Department and Dr. Stephen O. Olawuyi, Head of Clinical Services among other guest and presenters.
